Taking care of a dog can be difficult, especially if you’re not accustomed to the daily maintenance required by many breeds.
If you’ve recently adopted or purchased your first miniature Beagle, then you probably want to know how to take care of your new pet from start to finish.
1) Use Hygiene Products
While it’s true that dogs don’t need baths or professional grooming, they do need regular hygiene products.
A dog’s sense of smell is around 10,000 stronger than a human’s, so it only makes sense that they can smell you as well.
If you use deodorant, your dog will smell it and feel an urge to lick and nibble at your skin – especially after a long day at work.
As a good rule of thumb, wash first before touching your dog! That goes for shampoo too – keep some on hand just for Fido so he doesn’t end up with any unfortunate ingredients in his fur.
2) Brush Their Teeth
This should be a no-brainer, but it’s amazing how many people overlook their dog’s dental hygiene. The truth is, dogs need to go to the dentist as much as you do.
Brush your dog’s teeth regularly with a pet toothbrush and make sure he eats food that can clean his teeth, such as kibble or rawhide bones that have been soaked in water for five minutes.
If your pet has stinky breath, bring him in to see a vet—it could be a sign of an underlying health issue.
3) Bathe Them Regularly
Miniatures are a lot like any other dogs in that they should be bathed and brushed regularly. Though you can certainly buy doggie shampoo, you can also just use regular human shampoo on your pup.
While it’s not usually recommended, using soap is perfectly safe—just make sure it’s a mild formula and that your dog doesn’t get too wet while rinsing (shampoo residue left on their fur will dry out their skin).
And please don’t forget to condition their coat after they get out of the tub! That is especially important if you live in an area with hard water, as minerals like calcium can dry out and damage coats over time.
4) Feed Them Their Vitamins and Supplements
A great way to keep your mini-beagle in good health is by making sure they’re getting their proper vitamins and supplements.
Find out what nutritional requirements your miniature beagle needs and how you can meet them. For example, most dogs need a good daily multivitamin supplement with minerals, like zinc, copper, and iron.
Some also need additional essential fatty acids (EFAs) for keeping the coat healthy and shiny; most likely, if your mini-beagle has very short hair or an undercoat (like some terriers), it will benefit from these EFAs as well.
5) Protect Them from Parasites
If you’ve decided that you want a dog, it’s important to know what he could be exposed to. One common problem that dogs may encounter is tapeworms, which are not worms at all but rather segmented larvae.
To help prevent tapeworms, remove your pet’s stool from his environment and avoid feeding him rodents or uncooked meats (as these foods could contain tapeworm eggs). There are medications available for treating tapeworms.
If your miniature beagle is not yet fully vaccinated, ask your veterinarian about getting him protection from parasites such as heartworms (for dogs) and fleas and ticks (for cats).
And lastly, make sure your pet is protected against various viruses such as parvovirus.
6) Exercise Them Regularly
One of the best ways to make sure your miniature beagle is living a healthy life is by making sure they are exercising regularly.
Dogs often get plenty of exercise just from being active indoors, but if you take them for walks and have a fenced-in yard, it’s always good to make sure they are getting regular exercise.
A couple of short 20-minute walks per day can go a long way in keeping your dog healthy and happy. Not only does exercise help keep dogs trim and fit, but it also helps strengthen their muscles and bones as well as improve their overall happiness levels.
A little bit of physical activity goes a long way when it comes to making sure your miniature beagle stays as healthy as possible!
7) Feed Them Properly
One thing that is typically overlooked when you first get a miniature beagle is how much they eat. Many people don’t realize how quickly a Beagle can go through food and how it adds up over time.
It’s recommended that you measure out food portions using a scoop or scale so that you can make sure you feed them properly.
Then, weigh your dog weekly to make sure he/she stays at its proper weight. An extra treat now and then isn’t going to hurt but keep in mind they have very fast metabolisms and will quickly become overweight if they overeat even slightly.
8) Sleep Properly
The first tip is to make sure your miniature beagle gets plenty of sleep. Dogs need a lot more rest than we humans do, and although it’s tempting to keep them up late, you’ll end up with a sickly and unhappy dog on your hands if you ignore their natural sleeping habits.
If possible, allow your beagle somewhere quiet where they can snooze for as long as they like—this way they’ll be refreshed when it comes time for playtime.
9) Play With Them Often
No matter what breed your dog is, you should make sure you play with him or her often. This helps build trust between you and your pet, and it also gives them an outlet for their pent-up energy.
Although Beagles are very mellow dogs, they still need plenty of exercise if they’re going to be healthy and happy.
If they don’t get enough exercise, they may develop behavior problems like chewing on furniture or barking too much.
Exercising your dog regularly can help keep these problems at bay—and it will also keep both of you in shape!
10) When in Doubt, Take Them to a Vet!
If you’re not sure what’s wrong with your dog when in doubt, take them to a vet. Though taking your pet in for an occasional checkup is important no matter what their size, it’s especially important if they fall into one of those miniature categories.
Minis typically have shorter lifespans and are more prone to diseases than dogs of other sizes, so regular visits are recommended.
To keep your mini healthy and happy for as long as possible, make sure you always go to a vet who knows how to handle minis!
